Starting this year, the ABFM and Food Lifeline will be working together to put an end to hunger in Western Washington. We are trying to create just a bit of inter-marque competition and good-natured rivalry.
To do this, we will be collecting canned food and cash donations (checks work too) for the benefit of Food Lifeline. The way it works is thus: Bring your donations of canned and packaged food and any and all spare dollars and checks to the tent manned by the friendly volunteers of Food Lifeline, and let them know which marque to credit your gift to. Your gifts will be tallied (one dollar = 1 pound of food) and posted on a reader board. At two o’clock, we will take the totals for each marque, divide by the number of cars (or bikes!) in that marque to determine the winner. That’s right, the average per car wins.
This gives the smaller clubs with high enthusiasm an even footing (maybe even a leg up) with the bigger clubs! We will also be encouraging donations from spectators. Spectators can either dedicate their gifts to the total of their favorite marque, or, they can try to win the trophy all on their own. The winning marque will be awarded $100 in cash to be either added to their general fund, or donated to the charity of their choice in their name as they choose. This year, we will also be inaugurating a perpetual plaque that will list each year’s charity winning marque. The winning marque will have possession of this plaque and bragging rights until next year’s ABFM where it will once again be up for grabs.
In the event that there is more than one club represented in the winning marque, there will be a spirited round of negotiation and bargaining (roughly akin to a biggest lie contest…) to determine how the prize will be distributed and the trophy shared. Please feel free to interject all possible humor and bravado into this process….
Food lifeline manages to make 96 cents of every dollar work directly to ease food insecurity in our communities, let’s see how far we can go to give them something to work with!
